EU Commission’s proposal to half the use of biofuels rejected

Today European Energy Ministers rejected a political agreement on the Council position on the Indirect Land Use Change (ILUC) proposal of the European Commission.

In October 2012, the EU Commission presented an amendment to the Renewable Energy Directive (RED), which among other things suggested to half the use of biofuels. This proposal has been discussed throughout the last year in Brussels, but without reaching an agreement.

In a last try to reach an agreement before the European Parliament election in May 2014, the Lithuanian Presidency had proposed a compromise agreement. However, today this compromise agreement was rejected.

This means that it will not be possible to reach an agreement before the Parliament election in May, and that the proposal by the EU Commission is thereby dead.

What this means is that the political ambition from 2009, about 10 % renewable energy in the transport sector remains, and that this goal can still be achieved through the use of biofuels.
