EU member states support development of a protein supply system specific to the EU

According to euroalert.net, many EU member states support a proposal by the Austrian delegation for launching initiatives allowing the development of a protein supply system specific to the EU.

The Austrian delegation has stated that Austria welcomes the objectives of the proposed amendments to the RED and FQD, but that the proposal needs to be analysed in depth.

Austria furthermore states that the 5 % cap may be sensible from an economic view but need to distinguish between the different kinds of first generation biofuels. EU produced biofuels are good, because of, amongst others the co-products, but the impact assessment does not look at these positive impacts.

Therefore, many member states supported the proposal of the Austrian delegation for launching initiatives allowing the development of a protein supply system specific to the EU. They considered this would help to decrease the EU dependency to imports as regards protein feed. Some delegations pointed out the need to comply with World Trade Organisation (WTO) requirements with this regard.
