ILUC update

Meeting in the Ad-Hoc Working Group on ILUC

The newly established Ad-Hoc Working Group on ILUC met last week, and the feedback from the meeting has now been reviewed. According to ePURE, the European Renewable Ethanol Association, discussions did not progress very far, but more member states began to express their positions.

So far, only four member states find the 5 % cap on first generation biofuels acceptable: Sweden, Slovakia, Finland and Cyprus. At the meeting, Sweden expressed the view that the 5 % cap could only apply to biodiesel, while 19 member states raised concerns about the 5 % cap.

According to ePURE, the introduction of binding ILUC factors for accounting purposes is only been supported by Denmark, the UK and Belgium.
