UK biorefinery producing large amounts of protein feed

When Vivergo Fuels bioethanol plant in Hull, UK, officially opened in July 2013, the company became the country’s biggest bioethanol producer and largest single-source supplier of animal feed, writes James Barrett in Biofuels International.

Along with bioethanol, Vivergo will also produce 500,000 tonnes a year of protein-rich animal feed for the UK market, which is sufficient to feed around a fifth of the UK’s dairy herd.

The Vivergo plant offers greenhouse gas savings in excess of 50 % over standard petrol, which it claims is equivalent of removing 180,000 cars from the road. Furthermore, its animal feed reduced the need for imported proteins from South America.

Therefore, according to Rick Taylor, Vivergo’s commercial director, Vivergo brings clear economic and environmental benefits, which can only be good for both the UK and Europe.
