CO2 basics

CO2 (carbon dioxide) is an important building block in plants and a greenhouse gas that keeps the earth warm.

CO2 is emitted naturally by humans and animals, but the increase in the burning of fossil fuels has caused an unnatural rise in the amount of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere. The emissions have increased as the living standards around the globe have improved, and have therefore affected the concentration and cycle of CO2 in the atmosphere. This has caused CO2, which is a natural and important part of the Earth’s climate system, to be a contributing factor to global warming.
