EU dependent on protein import

Today, the main part of EU’s soybean import comes from South America. This puts an enormous pressure on the South American rainforests, which function as the planet’s natural carbon stocks.

If the EU wishes to reduce or avoid the import of feed protein, and thereby reduce the pressure on the South American rainforests, a more suitable use of feed wheat is an obvious possibility.

By making use of EU’s surplus of agricultural land for the production of feed wheat (with a view to processing it for protein feed and bioethanol), you reduce EU’s dependence on protein feed and fuel, and at the same time you achieve a positive climate effect through reduced CO2 emissions.

With an import of 44 mill. tons on a yearly basis – of which the main part is soybean protein produced in South America – EU is the world’s largest importer of protein feed.
